The number of components needed will depend on the shape and stability of the product being packed. However most symetrical products like cans and jars will normally only need 2 components:

Corrugated outer sleeve to encapsulate the tray packed product.
Unlike current products packed into a tray and an outer carton, there is no shrink wrap or binding that needs to be broken and removed to display the product on shelf.
